Eight wholetime firefighters to join stations across Cambridgeshire

Eight new wholetime firefighters are now ready to join fire stations across Cambridgeshire after successfully completing a wholetime bridging course last week. 

The group of eight firefighters completed a five-week intensive training course – known as a wholetime bridging course – to take them from on-call firefighters to wholetime firefighters.

To mark the occasion, their family and friends were invited to a special pass out ceremony, where they witnessed the recruits demonstrate the skills they had learned during their course. 

They have been serving the communities of Cambridgeshire as competent on-call firefighters for at least two years, but successfully applied to become wholetime (fulltime) last year. As they are already operationally competent as on-call firefighters they are able to do a condensed version of the course, to upskill the knowledge they already have. Some of the additional training the course covered, included animal rescue techniques, advanced immediate emergency care, water rescue, fire science, methods of entry and working at height (level two).

The recruits carried out their training at the Service’s state of the art training centre in Huntingdon.

Head of Wholetime, Group Commander Jamie Johnson, who hosted the pass out event said: “The group of firefighters have shown a great attitude and commitment throughout their course.

“They’ve worked really well as a team, and despite their course taking place across the heatwaves this summer, have shown great resilience.

“Many of them have already had multiple years of serving the community as on-call firefighters, and it’s great to see them continue their careers as they take on their full-time role with us.

“I wish them every success as they join their new stations.”
