Have you ever wondered what it's really like to be a firefighter?

Whether you're considering a career change, looking for a new challenge, or are simply curious about working in the fire service, this friendly and interactive session is a great place to start.

Our Try It Out Firefighter Skills Workshop offers a hands-on introduction to some of the activities and skills used by firefighters, giving you a taste of the role in a relaxed and supportive environment.

This is not a fitness test or assessment day. It's an opportunity to ask questions, meet firefighters and colleagues, and find out more about what a career in the fire service could look like for you.

What to expect

During the session you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Get hands-on with some equipment
  • Try a small element of the firefighter fitness assessment
  • Meet firefighters and hear about their experiences of the role
  • Learn about entry routes, recruitment and training
  • Find out about future events, including information sessions and full Have a Go Days.

This workshop is an opportunity to understand the role of a firefighter, the skills needed for the job, the recruitment process and entry requirements, and what support might be available throughout the application journey.

Who can attend

Whether you're actively considering applying or just want to learn more, you're welcome to come along.

This session is open to anyone who might be curious, would like to learn more about a career in the fire service or wants to better understand what the entry requirements might be. No previous experience required.

You will have the opportunity to speak with firefighters, recruitment colleagues or qualified fitness instructors, who will be available throughout the session to answer your questions.

Participants must be aged 18+ year of age.

A welcoming and inclusive service

We want our workforce to reflect the communities we serve and welcome people from all backgrounds to attend.

We particularly encourage attendance from groups that are currently underrepresented within Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, including women, people from ethnically diverse backgrounds and those who identify as LGBTQ+.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, and we value the different perspectives, experiences and skills that people bring to our organisation.
